Meet the Speaker

Low back pain is one of the most prevalent health conditions in the US. It affects a staggering 70-85% of the US population at some point in their life and more than $80 billion is spent annually on its treatment and care. Nearly all treatment guidelines utilize an exercise regime to reduce symptoms and hasten a patient’s return to normal activities. Unfortunately, non-compliance rates up to 80% are reported, limiting the success of exercise therapy and often leading to costly procedures ranging from MRI and CT scans to spinal fusion surgery combined with opioid or narcotic medication use.
To address this critical barrier to successful patient treatment, Innovative Design Labs and the Mayo Clinic are collaborating to build an effective, low-cost system to monitor and encourage exercise compliance in patients with low back pain. We’ll discuss our development progress, how we plan to test efficacy and solicit feedback on where to go next.
